PEARTREE LIFE: Experiencing Languages

12 DAYS OF CANTON Day nine - La Cuina

Our students Julia and Samir work in the same place and they interviewed their boss not only to practise their English but also to participate in our charity project.

What is your name and what is the name of your shop / business?

“My name is Montserrat Prat. Our business is called La Cuina”

When did you first open?

“We opened in 2012”

What do you do here? / What type of items do you sell? Why?

“We are a restaurant and delicatessen where you can purchase some of the items we use in our kitchen.”
Peartree: for example the fancy wine vinegar which you can win in our raffle : )

Why did you decide to open in Canton, Cardiff?

“This is the city where I have lived for over 18 years and where my children have been raised. They are Welsh and Catalan and it seems fitting that this is the identity of the business too.”

Can you tell us more about your business?

“No matter how big or small, a business is an economic enterprise, and as such I strongly feel that one needs to look at the impact this will have with the products it purchases both for suppliers and customers. For La Cuina this is an important ethical aspect of our trading. We import many of our ingredients from Catalunya, as you cannot find them in Wales. Most of the products are artisan, made in small quantities. We buy only from small producers, people who respect the land, respect the work they do and work in harmony with the environment and the people around them. One of our wine producers is a social enterprise, producing wines of the highest level but w also supporting people with mental disability. What does it mean for us? We work hard to manage the imports ourselves, we pay much higher than most products from Spain you could get in this country and our margins are very small, but we do it because we truly want to put a bit of Catalunya onto Welsh tables. Many people appreciate it and we feel that this is a real success.”

Thank you Samir and Julia for this interview and special thanks also goes to Samir who proved that he is a wonderful chef not only at work but also in his free time. You can see this wonderful cake which he brought us today to make us happy. It is gluten free and the base is made from orange and almond powder. Simply delicious! :)
