This Sunday September 29th, at 8.45 a.m. Wales will play Australia in the rugby World Cup. It’s a very important match and we will all make sure we set our alarm clocks early to get ready to cheer on Wales at this exciting stage of the competition. But, what is the rugby World Cup all about?
As you will know if you have spent any time in Wales, it is our national sport. We love to dress up, eat some Welsh cakes (as demonstrated by Nicky, our Centre Manager in this photo) and support our national team. The origins of rugby are quite controversial with many versions of the official 'story' about how the sport began. However, we do know that the first rugby union World Cup started in 1987 and was joint hosted between New Zealand and Australia. The winners take home the Webb Ellis Cup, which is named after the boy who, apparently, first picked up a football and ran, so creating the game of rugby as we (sort of) know it today. It is fantastic that this year the tournament will take place in Japan!
Although England have won the World Cup, unfortunately, Wales have never won the Webb Ellis, but could this be the year that we beat all other 19 teams??? Watch this space!
I’m sure that on Sunday will be an incredible day for Wales! Come on Wales!!!
