PEARTREE LIFE: Experiencing Languages

Diphthongs in English pronunciation as the main topic of our English for lunch

As we have seen lately, English spelling can be quite confusing for students, mainly when they are trying to figure out how to pronounce words.

We have already talked about the importance of knowing the phonemic chart when facing those dreaded 'oughs/aughs' and when trying to pronounce names of places in the UK.

Last week, we took a look at diphthongs in English! A diphthong is a combination of two vowel sounds in the same syllable, like in the words: voice /vɔɪs/, shout /ʃaʊt/ and pie /paɪ/. A good way to remember the diphthongs in English is thinking of a boy's face.

By using a phonemic chart, can you identify the diphthongs in English?

/eɪ/
/ɔɪ/
/aɪ/
/eə/
/ɪə/
/əʊ/
/aʊ/

What about these words (normally mispronounced by students)? What diphthongs do we use? (Use the Cambridge dictionary to find out!)

beer / bear / beard
fear / fair
show / cow
hear / here
height / weight

Join us next week for more pronunciation work. We're going to take a look at long vowel sounds! See you then!
