Halloween is over, it’s time to hide all the rotten pumpkins because another celebration is behind the door. Literally! On Saturday, the British will celebrate an event which is called Guy Fawkes night or which some just call it Bonfire night or Fireworks night. If you guessed it right there are going to be many sparks in the sky.
The 5th of November is the commemoration of Guy Fawkes, member of the Gunpowder plot, who had failed an attempt of assassination. He was arrested in 1605 while guarding explosives which the plotters had placed beneath the House of Lords to assassinate King James I. Celebrating the fact that the King had survived the attempt, bonfires were lit all around London. Since then people started to do it every year to remember that their beloved King James VI of Scotland and I of England survived and could rule for twenty more rather peaceful years.
It is very educational to remember the history but we have to face the fact that most of the people nowadays celebrate it just because of the fun and the colors in the sky. So where will the fireworks be this year? On Saturday 4th November there is going to be a famous Carnival event in Bridgewater starting at 7pm with a children parade, fireworks at 7.30pm and continuing well into the early morning hours with various carnival processions and squibbing displays. Moreover, there are various events going on throughout the day in Bridgewater so you can spend your day there. If this place is a little far for you, there are various events around Cardiff as well. For example, the most popular one, Sparks in the park, is on Saturday the 4th with an admission fee of £10 per adult. If you want to enjoy the sparks for free you can do so in Caerphilly, Barry or Porthcawl, all on Saturday from 7pm. And if you can’t make it on Saturday, go to Swansea to St Helen’s on Sunday, the gates are opening at 5pm.
From the examples above, if you have already decided to go to these events or somewhere else, please let us know in the comments section below. And don’t forget to enjoy this special weekend!
