If there is anything that can affect student attendance,
apart from sickness, family and work, it is the weather! This week one student
told us: ‘I did not come yesterday because it was very rainy’. You can
understand. Umbrella and wellies are essential equipment of anyone living in
this part of the world.
So what have we experienced over the past few weeks in
Cardiff? Rain, flooding and gales. The whistling of loud wind often heard in the
office. Parts of our beautiful Bute Park, stretching across Cardiff, were transformed into
lakes. We have had 2 storms, Ciara and Dennis, and are expecting another one –
Ellen - this weekend!
What about the names? The Met Office started naming storms
back in 2014 with the first being Abigail on 10 November 2015. #NameOurStorms
is a campaign by the Met office who ''chooses the names but they're asking for
members of the public to help by suggesting new names.'' Since 2016 they have
got more than 10,000 name suggestions!
Why name a storm? According to the Met
Office, a name will make people '' more aware'' of a big storm and make it easier
to track its progress in the media. Male and female names alternate.
Interestingly, studies show that storms with female names are more likely to
hurt people than those with male names. Scientists think that it has to do with people
finding female names less threatening. The image below shows the names for 2019
